Below are guidelines on what librarians can do in your classroom, depending on the amount of time they are provided. If you have an idea you want to discuss that you don't see below, please reach out! We are always happy to customize classes to be as specific and helpful to your students as possible.
For example, the Librarians have conducted classes on AI in education and research, evaluating online resources, maximizing Google searches, and assisting with utilizing the Westminster College Archives in class lessons.
Instruction Time & Class Options
10 Minutes: Introduction to Librarian, and mention/limited overview of Reeves Library Website
20 Minutes: The above introduction, plus a brief introduction of one specific library resource, or our general Discovery Search tool. This is not an in-depth search example, but just quick information on the resource, the location of the resource, and how they can start their searches.
30 Minutes Option 1: The above options, and a more entry-level overview of how to use one specific database or the general Discovery Search tool.
30 Minutes Option 2: Internet Resource Evaluation Overview. This entry-level option starts getting students to think about how to evaluate resources they find online and offers a few Google search tips.
45 Minutes: In-depth research tutorial helping students formulate their research question and keywords, and provide more information about accessing and navigating articles.
45 Minutes (Option 2): Resource evaluation using the S.I.F.T method, with in-class activities and tips for searching Google and other online resources effectively.
10-30 Minutes: Basic overview of Reeves Library website and entry-level information on 1 or 2 specific databases or more information on our Discovery Search tool. With 30 minutes we can provide students with time to work and ask questions.
45 Minutes: In-depth research tutorial helping students formulate their research question and keywords, and provide more information about accessing and navigating articles.
45 Minutes (Option 2): Resource evaluation using the S.I.F.T method, with in-class activities and tips for searching Google and other online resources effectively.
60 Minutes: Research workshop that offers detailed assistance that provides students time to work and ask questions in class. This can be a more in-depth overview of one or two resources, or the Discovery Search tool, with helpful information on formulating a search string and using the 'advanced search' funtions. This class can also be split with an overview of Reeves, and then some information on evaluating online resources.
