Logging Into Reeves Library

What is OpenAthens?

OpenAthens is the new single sign-on for Reeves Library. This is how you can access our digital resources from on or off campus. This new log in will streamline the research process, making it easier for you to access our materials no matter where you are!

Hopefully, you will not even notice OpenAthens working behind the scenes. When it is time for you to log in, you will be directed to a familiar campus login where you now use your email and password to access Reeves Library content.

Your new library login is your Westminster College email and password. To log in, just go to the library website, and start your research!

Browse these FAQs below, and explore the rest of the guide to understand how this will change your Reeves Library online experience.

What will change?

There will be no change to the number of resources, or where you go to access the resources, so you should still be able to continue with your work and research with minimal disruption to your library usage!

You will now be able to use your institutional credentials (email/password) to authenticate to your favorite online resource platforms both on and off-site, giving you the flexibility to start your research wherever you are. You will find this will look very similar to the rest of our Westminster logins and should be a familiar login screen.

Do I need to log in when on campus?

Nope! The library will continue to provide an IP authentication service, there will be no change to how you access online resources when on-site. There might be some resources that require an extra login (like Libby, Mango Languages, and Learning Express Library), but most default databases will not.

How do I log in off-campus?

For off-site authentication to the online databases, you will now be able to use your Westminster credentials (email and password). You will only need to authenticate once to start an 8-hour-long research session. During that time, you will not be asked to authenticate again regardless of the number of different content platforms you visit.

You will notice this will redirect you to a familiar login page! OpenAthens works with Microsoft Azure to create a seamless login experience. To log in, just go to the library website, and start your research!

How do I log in to start research?

You will be prompted to log in when you go to search a library database directly from the website. Once you are logged into your account through Reeves, you can easily continue your search through Reeves Library, or even through Google.

What if I find a resource on Google and not the Reeves Library website?

You can still log in even if you aren't on the library's website. Just navigate your way to your favorite online resource platform, and follow the instructions. The experience on the different platforms can vary but on some of the most popular platforms, you will have an option to log in with OpenAthens. Select your institution from a list and enter your institutional username and password.
Some platforms may ask you to select your federation when logging in, so please select OpenAthens Federation if needed.

What do you have to do right now?

  • Update your bookmarks and links
  • Merge your existing EBSCOhost account to save articles and folders

OpenAthens uses a different technology to manage access to resources, which will change the links you have saved when using the old system. To update links, make sure you have started an OpenAthens session and bookmark or copy-paste your updated link. You can find a website that will update these links for you in this guide!

If you have any issues, please get in touch with your library staff, they will be able to help you.
