AI & Academic Integrity

Academic Integrity & Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Is it cheating to use AI to complete your academic work?

When you are working on an assignment, usually you are being assessed on having learned or thought about a particular skill or subject. So, to help you use AI responsibly, consider these things:

  • Is the AI resource doing the thing for you that is being assessed?
Make sure you are doing the work that is being assessed. For example, if spelling isn't being assessed, you can use a spell checker to help you with spelling. This just helps you turn in a more legible paper. If your language and translation skills are being assessed, then you shouldn't use AI to translate your words.
  • Is the AI resource allowed by the course instructor?
If you are using a tool that has been specifically banned, OR if you use one that is not explicitly allowed, then it will be considered academically dishonest to use AI. You should always speak with your faculty member about any AI tools you are hoping to use.

When we discuss AI, we usually mean Generative AI, which refers to a class of artificial intelligence models that are designed to generate content from 'scratch' after being given a prompt. Things like text, images, audio, and even video can be easily produced by AI.
