Women's History at Westminster College

Remley Women & Gender Center

Remley Women and Gender Center was founded in 2000 to replace W.O.W. following concerns made regarding what else the acronym stood for. Since its founding, Remley has hosted a variety of events, programming, and has offered office hours with student interns and faculty, etc. that are focused on women and other gender issues.

Remley received its name from Dr. Audrey Wright Remley. Dr. Remley was originally a psychology professor when she started her employment at Westminster in 1969, but eventually became the director of academic advising and counseling services on campus in 1980. Additionally, Dr. Remley was a pioneer on Westminster’s campus as she was the first woman to chair an academic department at Westminster, direct an academic support area, hold the title of Dean at Westminster, and was possibly the first woman to attain the rank of full professor at Westminster. She also took a leading role in integration of women on Westminster’s campus.

Dr. Remley was also a very well-awarded and respected member of Westminster College’s faculty. She won awards such as the Outstanding Leader in a State Division of the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), and became president of the Missouri College Personnel Association during the 1981-1982 term. Following her term as president, Dr. Remley was elected as member-at-large on the EC of the ACPA in 1983. Dr. Remley was also a member of the American Psychological Association and the Midwest Regional National Women’s Study Association
